Ran into American Apparel the other night and said ‘I need a black dress that’ll make me look like one of Robert Palmer’s backing singers.’ It’s testament to the sales guy’s professionalism that he managed to refrain from answering ‘It’ll take more than a dress, love.’  

Here’s the end result. Warning – when it comes to the dark eyes/red lips combo there’s a very fine line between sophisticated (start of night) and Robert Smith (end of night).

Dress: American Apparel

Most of my stuff comes from the high street. But, encouraged by bloggers such as the wonderful Vintage Vixen (who sources amazing things for bargain prices), I’ve become more open to clothes shopping in other places - eBay, charity shops, car boot sales etc. 

This dress is an eBay purchase that I got for just £3. I really like it and feel quite confident that I won’t see anyone else wearing the exact same thing. 

A few months ago I wouldn’t have felt all that comfortable wearing something second hand. Vix, you’ve changed my mind (and my bank manager loves you already!).

I’ve been meaning to post about this for weeks. A while back I went along to the postgraduate degree show at Edinburgh College of Art and was really impressed with Katie Wood’s collection.

I really liked the elegant shapes and the mix of delicate colours and metallics. These were my favourites:
