Frill neck blouse

This is what I wore to the theatre to see Black Watch last Friday night. Only a week later and it’s now far too cold to wear a blouse like this without something cosy on top.

I like that the blouse is plain but has frill detailing at the neck (which can still be seen under a big jumper or cardi).

The play was fantastic. It’s based on interviews conducted by the playwright with former soldiers who served in Iraq and is really powerful stuff. I’d recommend seeing it if you get the chance (if you do go, take a packet of tissues with you – if you’re anything like me you’ll be sobbing by the half way point!).

Have a great weekend.

All Saints AW10

I’m pleased to introduce All Saints as a new sponsor of We Shop. You’re probably already familiar with their women’s clothing range, which is a bit edgier and more directional than that generally found on the high street.

I’ve been a fan of their pirate cardigan for ages – over the years I’ve had it in black, beige and stripes. On my current wishlist is this winter white version:

I’ve also been lusting after one of their women’s leather jackets for years. This belted one is my current favourite:

And I just love this leather skirt, which I’m sure I’d wear loads:

The prices are a bit higher than other high street stores, but it’s probably worth it for the design value. Let me know what you think of the brand.

What to wear…to a naming ceremony

style

This week’s Style Counsel is guest posted by Kirsty from Fashion Champagne.

Reader’s style dilemma:

I’ve been invited to the naming ceremony for my friend’s baby and need advice on what to wear. There will be loads of our friends there that I haven’t seen in ages. All of them are coupled up and a lot of them have kids. I’m single and am a bit worried about going on my own. I need an outfit that makes me look and feel fabulous! I’m prepared to spend up to £200 on the right outfit. I’m 26 and size 10.

Kirsty’s advice:

Oh, I feel your pain. Naming ceremonies are hard ones. I had this problem last year! Obviously you want to look your best, but you also need to look day appropriate.

Whenever I am invited to these things I always panic about what to wear. I gravitate toward summer dresses – unless of course it’s in the middle of winter, but tights can be added to this.

Throw in some heels and a crisp blazer and you’re good to go.

If a blazer isn’t your thing, a cardigan goes a long way – or a pashmina to cover your shoulders as churches can get chilly.

Hope this helps – have fun!

Thanks to Kirsty for answering this one. Great choice of outfit – love the dress.

London fashion week – final day

The morning after the night before…I spotted these balloons escaping from the Fashion Fringe venue on Sunday morning while walking through Covent Garden on my way to the Masha Ma show:

The outfit for my last day was a cream lace dress, with a camel cardi at the ready for when the sun disappeared behind a cloud. Definitely not as well turned out as these two gents:

The Masha Ma collection was brilliant – I loved the soft, drapey, neutral-coloured pieces teamed with gorgeous metallics:

More/better pics from the Masha Ma show can be found on Shini’s blog.

It’s bye bye to London for now – see you in February for the next LFW hopefully.

London fashion week – part 2

Packing for LFW was surprisingly easy. I was flying Easyjet (oh, the glamour) with hand luggage only so was forced to travel light. In the end I opted for just three dresses and promised myself I’d be really, really careful (no spag bol or red wine!).

On day 2 I wore a white dress (which strikes me in the photos as looking a bit nurse-like), my camel coat and big gold earrings that Pat Butcher would be proud of:

Spent the morning sightseeing in the sunshine…

…and the afternoon at Somerset House for the Craig Lawrence Siren Mermaids presentation, which featured gorgeous dresses made from metallic yarn and was accompanied by Bloody Marys on the balcony:

London fashion week – part 1

I was planning to visit my friend Sue in London as we hadn’t seen each other in ages, so took the opportunity to combine it with Fashion Week.

It was my first time there - great fun, but quite overwhelming. Next time I’ll be much more savvy about it all! A few pics from day 1…

Wearing a black dress with leopard print collar and my new favourite shoes – Clarks Originals wedge ankle boots (the only non-completely-flat shoes I’ve ever been able to bear for more than 2 hours, thanks Vicky for the top tip!):

It was lovely to meet some other bloggers, including Carrie from Wish Wish Wish:

Saskia from Not Just Medical and Jazmine from Jazabelle’s Diary:

On the first evening I skipped the after-show parties (not that I’d been invited to any!) and went with Sue to Sadler’s Wells to see the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre perform. We’d both seen them before and they’d been fantastic – and they were equally brilliant this time.

I’d never take pictures while the performance is underway, but took a couple of shots at the final curtain call:

More LFW pics to come over the next few days once I’ve sorted them all.

Champagne tea party

Last week I was lucky enough to be invited to the media preview of the new Veuve Clicquot afternoon tea at Hotel du Vin in Glasgow.

If someone offers me free champagne, I’m there! And I wasn’t disappointed – it was a fab evening. It’s a gorgeous hotel and afternoon tea there would be a lovely treat. A few pics from the night…

It was a chilly evening so I wore my new winter coat (which is currently keeping me warm in London – so glad I brought it!):
